“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees… in the open air, listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.” John Lubbock
Yes! I find it so hard to truly rest, to let go and allow the whirring in my brain, and taut springs in my body to relax. Even as I was picking rhubarb in the garden this morning, I was thinking how to craft rhubarb into a Substack essay, posting pics across social media & scrolling through my phone. I will now chop said rhubarb mindfully then take a cup of tea out by the burn.
Thank you for the prompt Suzy. I'm bugger for going at full pelt all day, everyday. I need to learn to give myself permission to rest.
A brave move. It was almost a relief when travelling in France in our van recently, we happened to park somewhere with no 4G! I also observed how my phone addiction was hampering my ability to read a novel yesterday and get absorbed in the story.
Funny thing, while reading this I just finished eating a lemon meringue pie at one of my favourite cafés. Can you guess what that pie also had in it… yup… rhubarb. Took a lot of inner discipline not to take a picture of it and post online.
Amazing 😍 so much love for rhubarb! It was my mum's favourite too - in fact it was the very last thing she ate before she died, fed to her by me, from a plastic spoon. ‘Lovely’ she said.

Yes, I know. My boyfriend suggested we have 2 days at the end of the month where we lock our phones away for two whole days . I’m going to try it. x

I can so much relate to this Sue! Especially the rhubarb thing. We could probably form a rhubarb club with no shortage of members. Yikes!
Love the idea of a rhubarb club!
Love the sound of a rhubarb club! I'm waist deep in the stuff

Oh Sue what a heartfel memory of your mum! ❤️
A beautiful and welcome invitation. Thank you x
I hope you managed to have a rest this weekend.
What a good idea! Write it down and let your mind rest, too...
Yes, am a big fan of journalling
I don't grow rhubarb but maybe the rest could be called rhu-therapy.
