When Everything Is Your Favourite Thing
Day 16 - can you get rid of 16 things today. Here's some inspiration.
Imagine a life where you were surrounded by only the things that bring you joy, value, and peace—a home filled with possessions that reflect who you are now, not the person you once were or the person you think you should be.
This was exactly the experience Joshua Fields Millburn, co-founder of The Minimalists, had after embracing minimalism and I find it so inspiraitional.
Joshua, like many of us, once lived in a house brimming with stuff. "I had a three-bedroom house teeming with stuff. A basement and a two-car garage filled with boxes overflowing with stuff. Spare bedrooms and closets and cabinets jam-packed with stuff. Every nook, every cranny - more stuff," he says.
And yet, despite all the stuff, happiness felt elusive, the clutter just weighing him down.
I get it. It’s ridiculous. I have just moved and I’m conscious of that overwhelm that comes with too much stuff—that mental fog that creeps in - making me feel anxious and unfocused.
I hate it.
Joshua explains, “It was hard to keep track of it, and all that stuff added very little value to my life. It often just made me feel anxious, overwhelmed, and depressed.”
When I watched Joshua on his Netflix doc, he started questioning everything he owned. What followed was a gradual, deliberate shedding of possessions that no longer served him. And with each item he let go of, a bit of clarity and space emerged in his life—space to breathe, to focus, and most importantly, to enjoy.
Just like the process we’re following this month with The Minimalist Game.
“Today, I don’t own much, but the things I do own add immense value to my life. When I got rid of my extraneous material possessions, what remained were the things I use every day,” he says. His home isn't filled with clutter anymore; it’s filled with intention. And that intentionality brings joy. “Now nearly everything I own is my favourite thing. All my clothes are my favourite clothes. All my furniture is my favourite furniture. All my possessions are my favourite possessions—all of which I enjoy every day of my life.”
I find this idea so inspiring.
Imagine that—a wardrobe where every piece makes you feel fabulous, a home where every chair is comfy, and every corner reflects something you love.
Minimalism isn’t just about getting rid of stuff; it’s about making room for joy. It’s about creating a life where every item you own has a purpose and makes you feel good.
It’s filling your life with your favourite things and people.
Journal Prompt:
Are you surrounding yourself with things you love, or things that weigh you down?
I loved the part about intention replacing clutter. Then filling your home and wardrobe with favourite things. I am going to add that to my set of “keep or let go questions”, when sorting …I apply the “does it bring me joy ? “ to my life as well. I will now add favourite things to do, favourite people to be with etc etc…really helpful and inspiring, thank you 🙏🏻
Thanks this is inspiring me to declutter which is so therapeutic 🙏🙏
