Prince Charming isn't coming. Rescue yourself. Zoom link for Heart leap Writing Hour below
At Heart Leap, I explore how to build a happy, creative, and simple life. At 9 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, I host ‘happy writing hours’ for paid subscribers. It’s for anyone who is trying to write a book, start a Substack, or just have a little accountability for their writing practice. We chat for 5 minutes or so, and then we write quietly together for the rest of the hour. It’s strangely comforting and motivational to have a cohort of writers to support you and write alongside you. I also run monthly master classes on motivation and inspiration.
“I was not rescued by a prince; I was the administrator of my own rescue.”
― Elizabeth Gilbert
I definitely have a wailing inner princess who comes out and waves her handkerchief feebly - sometimes.
When I’m tired, when I feel overwhelmed, when I lose faith in myself or the process, I just want someone to come and rescue me.
I have learned the hard way that this is not an effective strategy for living my life .
Now I’m older and (a bit) wiser, I just try and go to bed early and get some sleep, eat some good food and press pause on some projects until I feel strong enough to figure out a plan.
Then I’m capable of rescuing myself.
And yes, sometimes, I need to reach out for support, for advice, for comfort - but ultimately it’s me that has to sort things out.
There’s something quite terrifying and empowering about that.
What I’m learning is that to create a simple, creative sustainable life (a life that we can live without burning out, that feeds us from the inside out) - it’s about taking radical responsibility and taking daily baby steps with the odd big leap.
What would you need to do differently on a daily basis to live a life that sustains you from the inside out?
(If you want to create a sustainable writing practice, the Heart Leap Writing Hour starts at 9am today)
