How to make a decision that takes you in the direction you want to go.
How do you live a life that makes your heart leap? Make better decisions.
At Heart Leap, I explore how to build a happy, creative, and simple life. At 9 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, I host ‘happy writing hours’ for paid subscribers. It’s for anyone who is trying to write a book, start a Substack, or just have a little accountability for their writing practice. We chat for 5 minutes or so, and then we write quietly together for the rest of the hour. It’s strangely comforting and motivational to have a cohort of writers to support you and write alongside you. I also run monthly master classes on motivation and inspiration.
I wrote a book nearly 20 years ago called Making The Big Leap (under my old married name Suzy Greaves. You can read about why I changed my name to Walker with a silent Sky here 😂)
I have been coaching people to make big leaps in their lives for nearly 25 years – be in changing career or geographical home - but mostly it’s making the big leap in thinking,
Because big leaps are not really about what you are or where you are but who you are. It goes back to that old adage of – wherever you go – there you are.
The most important leap we will ever make is from head to heart. It’s getting out of overthinking, out of logic and connecting with what literally makes your heart leap.
How to make a good decision
Here are some things I know about making a good decision that takes you in the direction you want to go:
I have learned that no matter how great an opportunity or person seems – if it or they make your heart sink, just walk away.
When I start trying to convince and persuade myself to go on the date/collaborate with someone – I know it’s a sign that it’s not the right direction.
Believe in your heart’s wisdom – your heart knows the way and it will tell you loud and clear.
Decisions are the choice point that take us in a new direction but not always straight away. Sometimes you can lose the signal to your inner sat nav and you sometimes need to keep driving in the wrong direction before it kicks in and tells you that you need to make a ‘u-Turn’ (or a you-turn?)
Or the opposite - you might be ‘not sure’ and then you continue on the path that the decision has taken you and then you start to get that ‘heart leap’.
5 signs it’s a heart leap decision:
You feel excited but quietly smiley.
You don’t need anyone to motivate you - you can’t wait to see that person/do that thing
You feel relaxed and fulfilled versus driven and anxious
You’re not trying to prove anything to anyone.
Heart Leaping makes you smile and feels internally motivated
When you make a heart leap decision made from the heart (versus the head)- you ‘know’ what to do.
And then ‘all’ you need to do is be brave and act on the heart wisdom.
With the caveat that being brave is not easy.
And everything doesn’t always go to plan.
I was interviewed about this in Space to Think - a beautiful podcast hosted by the wonderfully curious Sarah Philip, a psychologist and coach who writes about freedom and has created a substack ‘where ideas grow wild.’
I’ve been very honest in this podcast about my own journey and how heart leaping decisions can be thrilling and sometimes scary.
In this podcast we talk about:
How to create an inner story that supports you versus destroys you.
How to identify when you’re going in the wrong direction
How to make a life leap.
How to be happier.
Here’s the podcast:
Love this, Suzy. Thank you ❤️
