How do you do it?’ said night
‘How do you wake up and shine?’
‘I keep it simple,’ said light
‘One day at a time’
Lemn Sissay
Over the past decade, celebrated poet Lemn Sissay has composed a poem every morning. His Morning Poems series, ‘let the light pour in’ have been collected into a beautiful new book of the same name.
A friend had advised him to ‘Wake with enthusiasm to the dawning of each day’. “I like that ‘cause when I write I feel like I am opening windows to let the light pour in,” he writes.
For Lemn, there isn’t a defined goal or an ending, instead he regards each poem as ‘an experimentation in hope’.
If you could create a experiment in hope this morning - what would it look like?
As we come up to the Summer Solstice this week, how can you let the light pour into your life this week?
If you’re not a poetry writer, what regular practice might help you focus on the light every morning? Journalling? meditation? Tea with an inspirational book?
What you focus on expands.
Heart Leap writing hour begins at 9am on a Tuesday and Thursday for paid subscribers. Here’s the link for today if you’d like to join a friendly, kind, supportive group of writers who for two hours a week quietly write together.
I hope you will join us.
I really needed to read this today...thank you 🙏 Living in the southern hemisphere we are approaching Midwinter and I desperately feel the need to welcome more light into my life. I love the thought that simple rituals can do that for us.
Oh, I love the idea of experiments in hope. I'll have to dream up some experiments for myself. It would be great to wake with enthusiasm more often.
